About The Traitor Baru Cormorant

This political fantasy novel follows Baru Cormorant, a young girl who watches the Masquerade Empire annex her island home and decides the only way to destroy the system is to become indispensable to it. She rises through the Imperial Accountant's exam, is posted to a troubled province, and begins the slow, precise work of manipulating an empire's finances to fund a revolution — while knowing that the Masquerade's agents watch everything she does. Seth Dickinson writes political fantasy with the rigor of economic theory: the mechanisms of currency, taxation, and trade are the actual weapons here, and they are rendered as thrilling as any sword fight. Baru is one of fantasy's great morally grey protagonists precisely because she is lucid about her choices — she knows exactly what she is sacrificing and does it anyway. Betrayal is the novel's central machinery: the reader learns, alongside Baru, which loyalties can be purchased and which will break under pressure. The war sequences and the cost of revolution are handled with unflinching honesty. The Traitor Baru Cormorant is demanding, original, and devastating — exactly what literary grimdark looks like when it trusts its reader to keep up.
