About Lord of Chaos
Lord of Chaos is the sixth entry in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time and the book in which the Dragon Reborn's political situation becomes as dangerous as his supernatural one. Rand al'Thor now holds three countries, commands the Aiel, and is attempting to forge a school for men who can channel - all while Aes Sedai of opposing factions maneuver for control of him, and the Dark One's forces probe for the exact moment to strike. The political tension in Lord of Chaos is at its most layered. The Salidar Aes Sedai - the rebel hall in opposition to Elaida's White Tower - send an embassy to Rand, and their attempts to manipulate him reveal both the power dynamics within the Aes Sedai and the extent to which Rand's early deference to the White Tower has hardened into wariness. Jordan uses this conflict to examine what it means to be a weapon shaped by other people's hands. Mat takes another step forward as a character, his role as a military commander and reluctant leader of the Band of the Red Hand giving him missions that matter beyond supporting Rand. His interactions with Aviendha and the Aiel deepen his relationship with a culture he cannot quite crack. The Forsaken are more coordinated and more dangerous than before. The book's climax - the Battle of Dumai's Wells - is one of the most decisive events in the entire series, a confrontation so large and so consequential that it reshapes the political order of the world in a single chapter. Jordan stages it with the logistical clarity and controlled chaos that distinguishes his battle writing, and the aftermath opens story threads that will unwind for the rest of the saga. Lord of Chaos rewards patient readers who have tracked the dozens of characters and factions across six long books. The payoff at Dumai's Wells is worth every chapter that builds to it.
